ALEXANDER COUNTY, NC (June 28, 2019) – Alexander County Commissioners, in conjunction with the Economic Development Corporation, continued their 2019 industry tours on June 19th at International Materials Group (IMG).
Commissioner Marty Pennell and EDC Executive Director David Icenhour met with IMG CEO Crawford Cutts, Thomas Wren, and Zhou Wanxin at their facility, located at 200 Commerce Drive, just off NC Hwy. 16 South of Taylorsville.
Cutts said he had extensive experience in the fiber optic cable industry, and saw an opportunity when a major supplier of fiber optic cable protection materials ceased production. He began searching for a facility in this region due to the area’s history of cable production, discovered the facility in Alexander County, and opened in May 2012.
Today, IMG is a leading provider of high-quality products for the fiber optic cable industry, including armor tapes, fiber reinforced plastic (FRP), and water-blocking tapes.
The company supplies 70 percent of all armor tape and 33 percent of all fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) in the United States and continues to grow its market for water-blocking tapes.
“International Materials Group has extensive experience and knowledge of the global wire and cable industry as well as a long history of providing exceptional quality products and uncompromising service,” said Cutts. “Through our global network of exclusive partners, International Materials Group provides the largest international cable companies with the highest-quality cable materials as well as comprehensive technical and commercial global support.”
In January 2017, the company doubled its building size from 35,000 square feet to 70,000 square feet to accommodate the growth of the business.
IMG employs 30 people, who work a 40-hour work week. Average starting pay is $13 per hour.
